To maintain a competitive edge in today’s market, businesses need employees who possess technical skills, plus the business skills that allow them to adapt to industries’ changing needs. The Plus Experience, a North Dakota EPSCoR
program, is a business and technology course that enriches the life and career success of students and graduates. Plus it provides businesses with team
members who can produce industry-specific results quickly.
Who benefits from The Plus Experience
This program is a series of courses geared to and designed by employers in the private sector. Over the next two years, these courses will target regional
industries such as biotech, engineering and software development.
The Plus Experience courses will greatly aid companies and students. Research indicates that startups, those companies with the least assets available for training of new employees, will benefit the most. In fact, the most enthusiastic
supporters of this concept come from that growth-driven, entrepreneurial sector. The Plus Experience is valuable to the region’s growing biotech, engineering and software industries. These sectors have approached us to develop such a program and are most likely to impact this program immediately.
The Vision
Develop a series of six- to twelve-week courses, available to students with at least two years of
college. Teaching and demonstration will be done by a combination of university and industry
personnel at sites relevant to the course material. The necessary skill sets will be determined by the participating industry-specific companies. The Plus Experience will target companies located in metro areas within North Dakota, as well as rural-based technology businesses and individuals. Input from participating companies will drive the innovative offerings that will provide students with “real world” expertise in the appropriate industry. This jumpstart program will enhance the preferred skill set of newly-hired employees, which will directly impact job productivity.
The Bottom Line
In a fast-paced environment, employees need technical skills, accompanied by business skills, to add value to a company. The Plus Experience is an industry-driven program that prepares students to meet real world expectations of employers, plus provides graduates a competitive edge in the job market.
